Pismo premijeru Kanade
Dear Mr. Prime Minister Harper,
I am writing this letter as a formal plea to reject the unlawful declaration of
independence of Kosovo. I understand that this will be debated in the coming
days, and as a proud Canadian, I urge you to not acknowledge Kosovo as an
independent state. Serbian interests and positions have been grossly
misrepresented by the media, and we are relying on the integrity of our
government to represent the views of all Canadians, including Serbian Canadians.
The Balkans have not been stable for quite some time. It has been argued by
some of the countries who had immediately recognized the declaration of
independence that this very recognition will bring stability to the region. I fail to
see how fracturing an already fractured area will provide stability. While the
European Union provides hope by uniting Europe, recognition of separatist states
can only serve to further destabilize the region. Kosovo is historically a very
important area to Serbians and has been Serbian for centuries. Just a quick look
at census records over the last 100 years will clearly demonstrate that the area
was only recently populated by Albanians. It seems unjust that Serbian people
have to pay for the sins of the Milosevic government by forfeiting this province.
The policies of previous governments in the former Yugoslavia that encouraged
ethnic cleansing and atrocities were NOT supported by the majority of the Serbian
population; I believe that peaceful solutions could have been negotiated in the
Slovenian, Croatian and Bosnian Wars in the early 1990’s. I believe that a
peaceful solution can be negotiated by Serbia and Albanians, and that Canada can
serve as a leader in helping to broker an agreement.
Please do not follow the lead of the United States, as their foreign policy clearly
does not support peace. I therefore, ask that Canada reject Kosovo's illegal
declaration of independence on Serbia's sovereign territory, and work with the
international community to bring about a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
